"Cheslyn Hay Success at Staffordshire Swimming, Girls Football and Athletics Finals Shobnall Stadium, Burton on Trent, Saturday, 07 June 2003

The swimming team (not run by school), the Athletics team Cherslyn Hay (run jointly by Cheslyn Hay Primary School and Glenthorne Primary School) and the Cheslyn Hay girls under 11 football team notched up huge successes today.

To qualify and represent South Staffordshire at the Staffordshire County Championship Finals had to beat off all competition in their section of the county and go forward to represent their section of the county.

We changed the Cheslyn Hay logo to "South Staffs". In some events it was an all Cheslyn Hay Primary School affair (Swimming and Football). In others (Athletics) it was a joint team performance with Glenthorne Primary School.

More than 1000 Staffordshire pupils aged 9-13 took part in events which included swimming, football, cricket, hockey, athletics and rugby representing their section of Staffordshire.

It was superbly organised. Bottled water and food available at all times during the day provided by the LEA.

It ran like clockwork.

Our results:

  • The swimming team won the trophy. (An all Cheslyn Hay affair)
  • The Athletics Team (a combination of Glenthorne and Cheslyn Hay) won second place.
  • The Girls under 11 football team (just 7 girls from our school) just failed to make the semi-finals by two points.
  • The South Staffordshire sports officer was glowing in her praise for the success of South Staffordshire pupils.
  • Miss Ward and Mr Tibbetts who have coached the athletics and football went home grinning from ear to ear (very sun burned!) basking in our pupils' individual and team successes.
  • There was a strict code of conduct about taking photographs of children . All cameras had to be registered for child protection purposes.
  • As the following photographs include pupils from Glenthorne, there are no names attached to the recorded successes and lovely moments.

I am sure any parent who attended the event would wish me to pass on your thanks to Sara Ward for devoting so much personal time and energy to inspire your children to take part in this event and direct it with such confidence and enthusiasm.

Martin Tibbetts.
