Curriculum Letter - November 4, 2002

Monday 4th November, 2002.

Dear Parents,

Following our half term break, these are our plans for the remainder of the Autumn term.

Literacy: Our work will include reading and performing short plays and poetry. We will also be spending time looking at non-fiction — report writing and letter writing. Children will be encouraged to extend their vocabulary by using dictionaries and thesauruses.

Numeracy: This half term we will be solving mathematical puzzles and problems. We will also be developing pencil and paper methods for multiplication and division including money and real life problems. We will also be doing some work on fractions, time (analogue and digital) finishing with ‘festive’ data handling.

Science: Our main topic will be ‘Light’ and we will be linking this to a road safety theme ‘Be Bright, Be Seen’.

ICT: Our work will focus on the development of the children’s keyboard skills and mouse control, using ‘Word’ software and CD-ROM’s.
Topic:
We will be continuing our work on Ancient Egypt. As part of our geography work we will be finding out about Africa, looking in more detail at Kenya, where we have sponsored a child for the children to correspond with.

Music / drama / dance: Our work will be largely based on preparations for our Christmas performance of ‘Cinderella’.

Dates for your diary: (performance dates for ‘Cinderella’)

Afternoon performance — Tuesday 10th December, 2002

Evening performance — Thursday 12th December, 2002

D&T: Our topic this term is ‘Packaging’. This will involve investigation of different types of packaging leading to the opportunity for the children to design, make and decorate their own packaging.

P.E: Swimming will continue as usual. We will also continue to develop our skills in games, in the areas of fielding, batting and bowling and to devise their own rules to enhance team games.

R.E: We will be exploring times of preparation and fulfilment. Looking at the celebration of Christmas and the events preceding the Christmas story i.e. the birth of John the Baptist. We will also be looking at the lead up to Christmas and the advent preparations.

Spellings and times table activities will continue as usual and as we approach Christmas, the children will be requested to begin to learn songs and words for Cinderella.

We hope this outline is useful to you and would like to thank you for your continuing support.

Yours sincerely,

Mrs J. White Mrs J. Flynn Mrs L. Mellor Miss L. Newton
