Curriculum Letter Summer 2005 Dear Parents, This is the Curriculum we are planning for the next half term. The final part of the Summer term is always particularly busy as we try to make the most of the better weather. It would be very helpful if your child could keep PE kit in school (trainers can be used on the school field but not for indoor PE) and have a hat, and possibly sunscreen available. If your child has an asthma inhaler in school please check that it is in date and functioning as many children's asthma seems to get worse at this time of year. Literacy: We will be starting by writing our own play scripts, then producing puppets to perform them. A major focus will be on speaking and listening. We will then be using Geordie Racer - a BBC Look & Read series as a stimulus for other work. Please continue encouraging your child to read as much as possible, more able readers do not need to read aloud to you all the time, it is often beneficial to let them read silently then ask what they have read encouraging them to notice interesting details and exciting vocabulary. Spelling tests will continue as usual. Maths: We will start the half term with data handling; this will involve using data from other subjects such as History and Science. We will then move on to capacity, multiplication and division. Pupils will continue to learn, and have tests on, multiplication tables Science: Our topic is 'Plants', this will involve quite a lot of work outside. If you have any books on plant identification which you are happy for your child to bring into school it would be very helpful. ICT: We will be continuing with methods of handling data which links with our Numeracy work. Design & Technology: Our topic is 'Moving Monsters' and involves pneumatics and burger boxes! Ask the children about it later, we are sure they will enjoy it. History & Geography: We are continuing with our 'Local Study' of Cheslyn Hay. As part of this topic we are planning to go on a longer walk around the village looking at features of interest. As before we will take the opportunity of going when the weather is favourable as we want to do some sketching. Please return the permission slips as soon as possible. We are also hoping to visit the flower festival celebrating 150 years of Salem Church. Music: There will be a focus on singing and recorder lessons will continue. PE: Athletics and games will be our focus. Our Swimming Gala is on June 16th and Sports day is planned for June 28th with the reserve date being June 30th. Parents are invited to both events. More information will be sent nearer the time. Religious Education: Our topic is 'Responding to Nature'. Your child will receive their school report on Friday 1st July. We thank you for your support during this school year and look forward to meeting you at Parents' Evenings week commencing 4th July. Yours sincerely,
