Writers Cup - 21st October 2006 The winner of the Writers Cup (week ending October 21st) goes to Lucia Zollino, of Year Three, for a brilliant time travel story where on a boring Saturday morning Lucia decides to build a time machine to travel back in time to study the Ancient Egyptians. A superbly crafted story that she has taken a great deal of pride in! Well done Lucia! The Amazing Saturday One morning I woke up urgh, it was Saturday morning. I heard a clanging and a banging in the garden, so I went to see what was going on and to my amazement there was my dad standing at a desk with those googly things around his eyes. Just then that gave me an idea, I remembered that I was doing about Ancient Egypt at school but I wanted to see the real thing. So I went into my bedroom and got my little metal bin and put it in a big box, and then I went into the attic and got some springs from the old single bed (that used to be my brothers) and then I got my old pram wheels. I went downstairs and got a saucepan and brush and gave it all to my little brother (he could use the exercise) then we went into the garden and stole some pieces of metal from my dad. My brother and I went into the living room and got a plastic round ball for the button. When we were doing that he couldn’t understand where all the things were going so I had to wait until after lunch because my little brother was going to a party, I wished that I could go too! Just then I had another idea, if my brother went then we could use the things in his party bag to make the time machine. We were starting to build the time machine when my cat came into the living room and wrecked the time machine. I was so angry I ran into my bedroom. So I got some jam jars for the time machine but they were still full with jam so I had to eat all the jam by myself. Afterwards I felt so sick I couldn’t possibly eat it all by myself. After a whole day of hard work my time machine was done, without my brother! Then I decided to sit in it. But… my cat came bouncing in again, this time pressing the go button! I was in it now I couldn’t get out, not now the cat had pressed the go button! Arggggh, I could now feel myself going through the air (still screaming) Just then my brother came out of nowhere and landed on my lap. We felt like we were being spun around there was multicolour everywhere and my brother and I felt sleepy. BANG! We were in Ancient Egypt. There were lots of people slaving for well dressed important people “We are really here now, we are!” Then right infront of us there was a man with long hair having his head chopped off, so my brother and I ran into a really old shop. I was scared and shocked that I was here. I could see the Egyptians slaving away. When we went back out again we saw a man without a head. Another person holding his head. After that we decided to go and see the unbuilt pyramid. I touched it and it felt really smooth only a man came near me and I could smell the grease and sweat he had on his body. When we went for a walk all the sand was been blown to my lips. At night time I was next to the window so the sand was being blown to my lips again, and I probably had a mouthful of sand. Just as I was going to sleep someone shouted at me and told me to get to work. So I got up and said “What work?” I asked This man in a hut told us never to go near the pyramid again otherwise they think that you work there so they shall ask another person where you live and you would have to be up really early. When we left the man in the hut we were sad that he couldn’t help us find our time machine so my brother kicked something hard and we went through a multicolour moment just like when we came to Ancient Egypt. Suddenly, plop we landed back at home and mom called us for tea. So we went downstairs to have tea and told mom what we did that day we told her but she didn’t believe us. The next day was boring because it was Sunday. We were so exited when it was Monday and we woke up really early so we could show off our new time machine. All my friends wanted to keep touching my time machine. When I told my teacher she said that next time I should build a bigger time machine and the whole class could go! I described how the pyramids felt when they were being built and she gave me five house points, at least everything was back to normal! Now… By Lucia Zollino
