Hollybush National Leader
in Re-cycling

The Hollybush Garden Centre have won a National Award for making compost that is completely friendly to the environment as it is made from "Green Waste".

On the 19 November 02 five children from Cheslyn Hay Primary School went on a trip to the green waste centre at the back of the Hollybush centre .We went around looking at the green waste being re-cycled . The compost came out of the machines very hot and was put into heaps to cool .

The process takes 16 weeks from raw green waste to fine compost.

Lorries are charged according to the weight of compost they take away or green waste they bring in.

Green waste is shredded

Then put into long piles to rot down for 8 weeks

The temperature inside the piles can reach 80 degrees

The piles have to be agitated regularly to allow the whole green waste to rot down. Sometimes this does mean an unpleasant smell blows across Cheslyn Hay

But we didn’t smell a thing on our trip!

After 8 weeks the green waste is moved into a machine that sifts out the compost from the mulch

New compost filters through the sifting machine. The larger mulch is used to stop weeds in parks and gardens. Nothing is wasted.
