Laches Wood Diary – Thursday
by Team P
Today was our ‘Expedition Day’ to Carding Mill valley.
Team L – the stream survey
As it was a bright, chilly day everyone was encouraged to wear at least 4 layers of clothing.

Team M
The coach arrived at 9.30 and we were all excited and jumpy!

Team I

Team J
The coach ride was quite long so everybody made up games to make it go quicker. When we arrived we got out of the coach and walked over to the stream.

Teams N & O
We then measured the stream using a baseline and a tape measure. We recorded our results on a worksheet and measured the banks using far banks and near banks.

Team Q
Then we sketched the stream and the surroundings. We then went to the toilets and washed our hands before lunch.

Teams P & Q are taught how to draw cross section sketches
We then went over for lunch. After lunch we set off for a walk to the bottom of the hill or as you may picture it the ‘lollypop stick’.

Team P
We set off to find we had to climb to the VERY TOP!!

Measuring the speed of flow of the stream
We got to the first part of the river where we saw the middle of the river where we saw the first meander in the middle aged river.

Timing how quickly the balls floated 15 metres
When we got to the half way point we could see the starting source. The hill got flatter and flatter until we reached the top.

On top of Calf Ridge
We looked at the view and took loads of pictures! Then we started to climb down the hill until we finally got to the bottom of the hill. We climbed onto the climb into the coach and soon after we set off for home…
