Year 6 Autumn Term Curriculum 8th September 2006 Dear Parents, We hope you had a pleasant summer. English: we are looking at Great Expectations and Treasure Island, focusing on descriptive writing. Every pupil will have a personal target relating to their use of punctuation – please discuss these targets with the children and the progress they are making. We will be joining the initiative 'Raising Attainment in writing through Sports' (RATS) with other local schools. The launch will be at Aldersley Stadium and we will send you further details nearer the time. Children are expected to read each evening as part of their homework as well as receiving a weekly spelling activity. Maths: we will be following the National Numeracy Strategy, with an emphasis on mental maths. Solving practical problems at home would provide valuable practise. Our targets for this term are: to know place value up to three decimal places; to multiply and divide by 10, 100 and 1000 and to be able to order a set of positive and negative numbers. Science: we will be looking at the processes of filtering, dissolving and evaporation. This will be supported with practical experiments. Geography: the focus for this term is on the River Severn. To support this, we are planning a visit to Carding Mill Valley during the week we are at Coven. RE: our theme is rules for living and we will look at this in the context of Christianity, Buddhism and Sikhism. Art: we are looking at the work of L S Lowry and building on this using ICT. Music: Bedrich Smetana is the focus of music lessons this term, with emphasis on listening and composition. During this topic we will particularly look at his piece ‘The Moldau’. PE: this will be linked to our sport and literacy project. PSHE: This year we are very fortunate to be taking part in a project sponsored by the Staffordshire ambulance service’ ‘What me, save a life?’ The children will learn basic first aid skills including CPR and will have the opportunity of obtaining a certificate in first aid. We are hoping that it will be this term but this is dependant on the availability of the paramedics who run part of the course. ICT: our ICT work this term will cover using several programmes such as Word, Publisher and PowerPoint. Children will learn to use the Internet to search for and collate text, graphics and audio/video. The focus will be on Citizenship and PSHE, as well cross-curricular activities. Additionally whilst we are at Coven we will be learning literacy, maths, science, geography, PE, PSHE and ICT in a very practical, enjoyable and memorable way. Yours sincerely,
