Year 6 Spring Term Curriculum 12th January 2006 Dear Parents, Year 6 Spring Term Curriculum We would like to wish you and your families a Happy New Year. This is the curriculum for the first half of the Spring term. English: The term has started with a series 'Accident' encouraging reading skills: inference, deduction, following instructions, skimming and scanning for information. Our RATS project is continuing with a Tai Kwon Do focus which will lead into a variety of skills including reports, recounts and persuasive arguments. We will also spend more time on story writing. Pupils will continue to receive weekly spellings and are expected to do the homework on the sheet and return it on the day of the test. Children should read each evening as part of their homework. Please ensure homework diaries are signed weekly with any extra comments you may wish to add. Maths: we will be following the National Numeracy Strategy, this half term is commencing with number patterns and place value with a decimals focus. This will be followed by mental strategies for and written approaches to subtraction and addition. One of our maths targets is that pupils should be able to add and subtract 3 and 4-digit numbers to 2 decimal places. This will be covered throughout this half term. Science: we will be starting the term with food chains, habitats and adaptation then moving on to Forces. ICT: pupils will be learning how to use the Internet to search for specific information. This will link directly with our history topic, the Greeks, and pupils will use a 'webquest' to carry out research. Children will have the opportunity to research and design their own webquest. History & Art: we will begin out study of the Ancient Greeks this will link with our Art work 'What a performance' where we will design and make hats and Greek theatre masks. RE: this will be linked to our multicultural week and our visit to the Buddhist PE: volleyball and gym as well as some Tai Kwon Do sessions. Homework: children will continue to be set homework each week. Some homework will be required for the following day as it will be preparation for the next lesson - it is important that pupils do such homework on time so that they can obtain maximum benefit from their lessons. Yours sincerely
