Rotary Club of Cannock,
Schools
Sunday 27th January 2008 Fifteen pupils from Cheslyn Hay Primary School gave up their Sunday afternoon to represent the school in the annual Rotary Club event at Cannock Chase Leisure Centre and enjoyed an afternoon of fiercely contested football. The boys played with talent, pride, commitment and dedication today and again made me immensely proud to take them out with me. And that is not to mention, the support given by our parents which as so often is second to none.
Our ‘A’ team, finished third overall in the tournament, picking up wins against both Gorsemoor sides entering the tournament, beating Longford B in a 4-2 nail biter – and if that wasn’t enough… edged out West Hill A 4-3 in a sudden death penalty shootout, with none of our boys missing from the spot! Unfortunately, the hard work was undone, being defeated by eventual runners up Moorhill, 3-1 in the semi final. All the same, we only lost two games in this tournament, against the teams that came first and second, so we can hardly complain at that. Eventual winners were St Lukes, who some might remember, beat us in the three way final at Moat Hall earlier in the year, they seem to be, becoming a bit of bogey side!
Cheslyn Hay B Despite not getting on the score sheet in this tournament, the Cheslyn Hay B team performed well, battled hard and never gave up. This sort of performance will stand them in good stead for when they go on to high school, knowing they can hold their heads up high. The team ethic was summed up by the willingness of all players to play in a variety of positions, including, in the three games having three different goalkeepers! Throughout the children worked hard, encouraged each other and never gave up trying. Hednesford Town and local born striker, Ross Dyer presented the players with their medals. Ross played in this tournament, some eight years ago! Perhaps this will give something for our young footballers to aspire to?
The boys with their third place medals. Thank you to everyone for putting the time, effort and dedication in with your children, for bringing them here, for helping with organising as well as washing of kits, encouraging and supporting both the children and me, I couldn’t have done it without your help. Many, many thanks Rob Hughes |
