Cheslyn Hay High School
ñ High 5 Netball Tournament

Organised by Mr. Field, School Sport Co-ordinator

Tuesday 20th November, saw the second tournament ran by Mr. Field, this time the focus being Netball. Squads of seven, taking part in a High 5 Netball tournament.

After a couple of hastily arranged lunch time sessions a group of children were chosen to represent Cheslyn Hay against the other four partnership schools, Glenthorne, Havergal, St John’s and Whitgreave in a league format.

The idea of High Five Netball is to rotate children throughout the positions over the course of a tournament and also provide them with the opportunity to experience elements such as scoring and time keeping.

The group of children Miss Condley and I took with us to the high school were brilliant, despite starting with a couple of heavy defeats, against Glenthorne (5-0) and St John’s (3-0), we showed great strides, improving game on game, our next game brought a narrow defeat, (2-1) against the eventual winners of the tournament – Havergal, before gaining a draw against Whitgreave (0-0) in our final game.

After struggling to gain any forward momentum in the first couple of games we began to come more into it. I fully expect us, as we get used to playing competitive matches and training on a regular basis, hopefully in the spring term after school, our children will develop immensely.

Mr. Lloyd from Glenthorne has already set about asking us for some friendly matches before Christmas and I hope to get this arranged, not only letting those that showed tremendous commitment on this occasion, but also those children that have been incredibly committed, coming to lunch time and after school sessions.

On a separate issue, away from school, Cheslyn Hay Leisure Centre run from 6-7pm on Tuesday’s a netball coaching session where children can further hone their talents. For more information see Ellie and Bethany and they will tell you more about it!
