Curriculum Letter

Dear Parents,
We hope you had a pleasant Christmas and wish you a Happy New Year. This is the curriculum letter for the first half of the Spring Term for Year 5.
Literacy: We are following the Literacy strategy, looking in particular at traditional stories, including myths, legends and fables.
Numeracy: We are following the Numeracy strategy, looking in particular at place value, multiplication and division, fractions, decimals and problem solving.
Science: Our focus topic for this term is "Gases around us". We will be looking at the classification of materials into solids, liquids and gases, the uses of some important gases and where gases are found.
History: We will be looking at the Victorians, focusing on Queen Victoria, the lives of Victorian children and how attitudes towards children changed.
Art : Our focus topic for this term is "Talking Textiles". We will be exploring how stories have been represented in textiles in different times and cultures and creating our own depiction of simple stories through a variety of media.
Music: We are looking at two or more part songs. This will develop the ability to sing and play music, exploring the effect of harmony through two or more pitched notes.
P.E. The children will be exploring and improvising ideas for dance styles. Class 5H will be improving their agility in gymnastics and Class 5C will be swimming.
R.E. This term we are exploring some of the individual responses to God in prayer and worship.
Each week we will be giving the children spellings and tables to learn.
