Autumn Term Curriculum

Friday 7th September 2007

Dear Parents,

This is the curriculum letter for the first half of the autumn term.

Literacy:  we will be following the new framework for literacy.  The first unit of work is narrative writing, followed by stories from other cultures.  Emphasis this term is on presentation and handwriting:  please note that all pupils are expected to join their handwriting in Year 5.  Pupils having difficulty with this will be provided with handwriting books so that they can practise at home.

Pupils will continue to receive weekly spelling families and are expected to do homework collecting words and learning how to spell them for periodic tests. Children should read each evening as part of their homework.

Maths:  during the first term, children will be working on partitioning, understanding place value and rounding and comparing numbers.  Our targets this term are solving word problems.  Children will be expected to know their times tables up to 10x10.  Mental maths homework will be sent periodically.

Science: This half term, we will be looking at keeping healthy; this will be linked to P.E. and ICT.  Children will be carrying out investigations and will be encouraged to work more independently.

ICT: ICT skills will be taught cross-curricular.  This will include Word and Publisher skills; using and creating databases; data handling in Excel; along with using the internet to copy and paste graphics.

History: we will be looking at Tudor exploration.  Homework for this half term will be topic based.  More details will follow and will be posted on the Y5 section of the website.

PE:  The children will be swimming this half term (from 17th September) and will be using the apparatus in gymnastics.  Tudor dance will also be covered.

Yours sincerely
