Y3/4 Kwik Cricket Tournament

Organised by South Staffordshire Council

Hosted by Penkridge CCC

The salubrious surroundings of Penkridge CCC was the destination for our excited group of Y3/4 cricketers on the 6th June – where we took part in a tournament involving five schools and six teams, competing ferociously as a team and coming out of the day as runners-up in what turned out to be a tightly contested final.

Thanks to Mark Jenkinson for again running a festival blessed with good weather and Paul Lloyd from Glenthorne for enabling us to get to the tournament allowing us to share his school's coach – and then causing them to run late due to our appearance in the final!

Our first game of the day was against Princefield and with Jack losing the coin toss we were put into bat by the Princefield captain, also known as… Jack.

Cheslyn Hay won by 3 runs.

Player of the game for our first match was a very tight affair due to such a close score line, but Darren has to win this one for his bravery. After four 4s from the first five balls of the fourth over, Princefield threatened to run away with the game, but brave fielding from Darren prevented a Princefield six. If this had gone for six, we would have lost the game by three runs and not reached the final. Of course, other notable performers have to be Ellie for starting the game right on target with two wickets from her first two balls, tight bowling by Nathan in the pressure situation at the death.

In all, a very gritty performance from the team!

Game 2

Our second game of the group and needing to win to guarantee our place in the final was against Glenthorne ‘B’ – speaking to Mr Lloyd on the coach trip over he made it clear he had ensured both his team were of roughly similar ability

Cheslyn Hay won by 51 runs.

Tidy bowling and wickets from Holly and George ensured this victory – along with some hard hitting from Nathan, Jack, Lewis and James with the team ‘doing it for Darren.’

This meant we won our group, as neither of our opponents could win both their games and we went through to play the winners of the other group, St Paul’s, Coven.

Game 3 the Final

St Paul’s Coven coached by Advanced Skills Teacher, Pat Kennedy of St Nicholas First School were our opponents in the final and having lost the toss we were put in to field first and see how many runs we would need in the run chase.

The pressure told early on with our children struggling to come to terms with a different umpire and the calls being made, but they soon settled down to give a tremendous account of themselves, showing plenty of Cheso drive and determination.

Cheslyn Hay lost the final by 1 run in a final that put me through every emotion imaginable!

Notable performances in the final were Jack Barratt for starting the innings with a six and two fantastic catches. James for a superb caught and bowled as well as three sixes in our final over in partnership with Lewis, just failing to reach 245 for the draw. Madness!

Congratulations to St Paul’s, Coven for their win – this time… but next year we will only come back even stronger

Captain Jack (not sparrow) is presented with our Runners up shield, and medals for all team members, plus certificates for taking part, by organiser Mark Jenkinson.

At Cheslyn Hay, we don’t just like cricket – we love it!!
