When History Meets Art in Year 3 and 4 Saturday 28th April 2007 The opportunity to do a spot of cross-curricular learning in Mr Hughes’ class was too good an opportunity to miss as children embarked on the Vikings many avenues opened up. One avenue is Viking weapons and that was the inspiration for this piece of work. Children have been finding out that Vikings were fierce raiders who attacked unsuspecting people with the aim of stealing their lands and their treasures. The Vikings had strong, heavy weapons that were often their own prized possessions, passed on to them from generation to generation. The Vikings often named their weapons to instil fear into those they were attacking. The following sequence of pictures shows children hard at work making their own Viking shields complete with frightening names. All to be revealed in due course.
Lewis deep in concentration, completely
Aidan making the ‘Boss’ for his shield.
Look at the concentration!
Small groups allowing for positive focussed discussion on Viking weapons and why they used particular items
A chuffed Ayse with her completed shield
Chloe with her completed shield…
I suggest you don’t mess with this young Viking!
Simple, yet ever so effective! With the quality produced so far, I have no idea how I am going to 'choose the best!' Huge thanks to Miss Condley for giving up her own personal time to extend the opportunities given to children in 4S, allowing them a chance to learn about history in a fun and enjoyable environment! Your efforts are appreciated. |
